Written by Kaye Chang

Do you want to start a blog? That’s great to hear! Not only is blogging a good past time, but you can also express yourself, help others, establish yourself, and even make money out of your blog.

If you are new into blogging, it helps to get started on the right foot. Getting the help of an expert is also a good starting step to avoid mistakes.

I’ve put this guide together for you to help you through the process of setting up your own blog in five simple and easy to understand steps. If you follow these steps, you will be able to set up your own blog in 30 minutes or less.

How to Start a Blog

1. Choose a blogging platform.

Choosing the platform where you will build your blog is the first thing that you need to do. There are a lot of popular platforms for starters: WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, and more.

There are more than 72 million active users for WordPress today, making it a clear choice for beginners. It is FREE for everyone, it’s easy to set-up, and it is highly customizable.

2. Decide between self-hosting or free account.

This will be the biggest decision that you will do. Are you willing to pay for your blog or are you going to use a free one?

Most blogging platforms provide free accounts, but if you want to monetize the blog fully, self-hosting is the best one to choose. After all, having a free account means you don’t exactly own your blog. It is hosted through someone’s web property, and they can choose to delete it anytime they want.

On the other hand, having a self-hosted blog with your domain name means that you are the real owner of the page. It represents who you are.

3. Start a blog with your domain.

You need to come up with a domain name that you like and choose the hosting company that will host your blog. The domain name is the URL of your page. This is Google of, Yahoo of or Facebook of

The hosting company is the one who will put your blog up on the internet for everyone to visit. Companies such as Bluehost and GoDaddy offers domain and hosting for a packaged fee.

4. Design your blog.

You can make your blog exactly how you want it to be. Choose a theme and a logo to represent yourself. There are a lot of free themes that you can choose from. Remember to use a blog design that reflects you and your personality.

It should not be tricky and difficult to move around since people will not stay. Make it easy for your visitors. Try and find something that people will remind them of you.

5. Add posts.

Now that you have your domain, hosting, and blog design ready, you need to generate contents for your visitors.

Creating a schedule for your contents will help you maintain the flow of your blog. You need to encourage your readers to visit your page frequently. Spacing out your posts will make them feel that there is always something new to read from your page.

There are no right or wrong topics. It depends on you, your target audience, your goals, and the whole theme of your blog.

And that’s it! Your blog is now ready to go!
